MAKERS LAB
Combining Science & Arts for Charity - 2021 Fundraiser
Ushering in 2021, the CHU Fund launched a new initiative – “Makers Lab” to help raise funds for the underprivileged children in the community. This signature event builds upon the foundations of the Fund’s inaugural event – “Recycling Art Drive”. Collaborating with MH Maker, a cultural and creative arts hub in Shenzhen, the Fund embarked on the creation of three larger-than-life art installations, standing as symbols of love for the less privileged.
Spearheaded by the youngest of the Chu sisters, Alicia Chu, 17, hundreds of volunteers as well as families with young children from the community were recruited for this cause. Together, they contributed more than 1,000 hours, working with masters in various traditional crafts.
The three artworks - titled “Garden of Love Blossoms”, “Ferry of Care” and “Sky Canopy of Love” – will remain as permanent displays for the rest of the year. Created using upcycled materials, these displays also amplify the message of environmental conservation, while raising awareness of traditional arts and culture.
Using leftover materials at MH Maker, more than 1,000 pieces of art works were also sold at a charity bazaar, in tandem with an online fundraising campaign to involve the community at large.
